I enjoy working with illustrators and animators. Here are some science and evidence-based films born out of that creative interest.

A mugger crocodile on shared space, fear and future

Freshwater crocodiles or muggers have lived close to humans in Gujarat’s Charotar region for decades. Sejal Mehta’s visit to the area and conversations with the residents and researchers helped her craft a sensitive and science-based narrative.

Illustrator Taarini Ravjit storyboarded, designed, and animated each frame while I art directed, fact-checked each visual, and edited the script.

The film was part of the 2021 SPECIAL JURY RECOGNITIONS announced by Jackson Wild Summit.

Script: Sejal Mehta

A wagtail on shared space, birdwatching and hope

School children in Valparai, Tamil Nadu, put up posters every year when the grey wagtail arrives in town from the Himalayas.

To script the video, I interviewed the teacher behind this initiative and a senior scientist. Illustrator Taarini Ravjit storyboarded, designed, and animated each frame while I art directed and fact-checked each visual.

Voice over: Siddharth Viyyapu

How the Sumatran rhino became critically endangered

Along with Mongabay colleagues, I worked with artist Roger Peet to develop two animated shorts about the Sumatran rhino. I worked on the storyboard, art directed Roger’s illustrated frames and supervised the video edited by the production house.

Illustration/animation: Roger Peet
Editorial: Isabel Esterman, Kartik Chandramouli and Manon Verchot
Animation and video edit: The Square Peg Films
